Winter in Yellowstone is my favorite season to visit the park. Last winter, I encountered this beautiful red fox hunting for prey in the snow along a thicket of willows. They are so fun to watch hunt. When a fox picks up a fresh scent, it will slow down, look, listen, and follow the smell to find the source. Once their prey has been located, the fox creeps within range and pounces on its target from above. I watched this fellow until the sun set catch one rodent after another. I knew this encounter would inspire a painting.
